Thanks Sean and Keiron for this. I'm presently teaching a literary description unit of work to primary students based on fantasy / fairytale characters and settings. The unit has a huge focus on visual literacy as well as the obvious descriptive language emphasis. My students would love to be able to create their own creatures for the descriptive language tasks or have fun sharing other people's designs. I see a very useful application of something like this with kids in the classroom.


I've noticed that kids often feel frustrated at being restricted to the character options that have been pre-selected by games designers. Although it looks like there is a limited number of body parts available here the level of customisation of the available shapes is really impressive! This seems like something that could be really powerful.

Another commercial game which I'm excited about in terms of supporting creativity and customisation is LittleBIGPlanet. This has level design built into the game play. Exciting stuff! http://www.mediamolecule.com/games.html

Another game worth watching is Bioware's next big release, Dragon Age, which will reportedly include a game-making toolset just like Neverwinter Nights 2 does. Some aspects of the NWN2 toolset could be a lot more customisable - the physical appearance of characters, for example - and hopefully that's something that may be improved in the new title.
